“Remember Lot’s wife.” — Luke 17:32
Lot’s wife isn’t given a name in the Bible, but her story left such an impact that Jesus Himself told us to remember her. That alone should make us pause. In just a few short verses, her life—and her choice—became a lasting warning for all of us. She was told to flee Sodom, to leave behind everything she knew, but in a single moment, she turned back. And that moment cost her everything.
We don’t know exactly why she looked back. Maybe it was grief. Maybe it was fear of the unknown. Maybe she still had hope that what she was leaving behind could be saved. But Scripture makes it clear: she hesitated. Her heart wasn’t fully surrendered, and that divided loyalty stopped her from stepping fully into the safety and future God was offering.
It’s easy to judge her, but if we’re honest, we’ve all done the same. We’ve all had moments where we felt God calling us forward, yet we clung to what was familiar. Whether it’s a toxic relationship, a habit we can’t seem to break, or simply the comfort of our old ways, letting go is hard.
Jesus referenced Lot’s wife in Luke 17 as a warning to His disciples. He was talking about the day when people would need to act quickly and decisively—when hesitation could cost them dearly. The warning wasn’t just about end times. It was about the posture of our hearts. Are we willing to leave behind everything for Him, or are we still glancing back at the life we used to have?
Obedience is more than just moving our feet—it’s aligning our hearts. It’s choosing to trust God so fully that we don’t need to look back. Lot’s wife walked in the right direction, but her heart was still tied to Sodom. That’s the danger of divided faith: when we try to follow God while still holding on to the past, we never fully experience the freedom He offers.
There will be times when God asks us to walk away from things we thought we needed. There will be moments where the call forward requires sacrifice. But the promise on the other side is worth it. Full surrender leads to full life.
So what is God asking you to leave behind? Is there anything holding you back from full obedience? Don’t hesitate. Don’t look back. He’s leading you to something far better.
A Prayer for Obedience
Father, help me to trust You completely. When You call me to move, give me the strength to obey without hesitation. Guard my heart from longing for what You have asked me to leave behind. I surrender my plans, my fears, and my attachments to You. May my heart be fully Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
