“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people, and your father’s household to the land I will show you.’” – Genesis 12:1
Abram’s story starts with a command: Go. Leave behind everything familiar—his home, his people, his inheritance—and step into the unknown. God doesn’t give him the details. There’s no map, no timeline, no clear picture of what’s ahead. Just a promise.
And the choice to trust it.
The Cost of Following God
When God calls us to something new, He often asks us to release something first. Maybe it’s a job, a relationship, a dream we’re gripping too tightly. Sometimes it’s our comfort. Sometimes it’s control.
“We have to empty our hands of what’s in them in order to receive what God has for us next.”
Abram didn’t just leave behind a house. He walked away from security, from family, from the only life he had ever known. And he had no guarantees—only God’s word.
That’s the tension of faith. The step before the blessing.
God’s Promises Come on the Other Side of Obedience
God’s words to Abram were full of promise:
“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you… All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
Abram had no children. No heir. And yet, God was asking him to walk toward a future that seemed impossible.
Maybe you’ve been in that place too. Feeling like what God is asking of you doesn’t make sense. Feeling afraid of what you might lose in the process.
But here’s what we need to remember:
God is not asking us to give up anything He’s not planning to replace with something better.
Abram couldn’t see the full picture. But God did. And the same is true for us.
Where Is God Asking You to Trust Him?
Years ago, I had to walk away from something that felt like an opportunity I had been working toward for years. It was hard. It didn’t make sense. But God made it clear that I needed to lay it down.
And the same day I let it go? A new door opened—one that launched my calling into something far greater than I could have built on my own.
Maybe you’re in that space right now. Holding on to something, afraid of what might happen if you let go.
Maybe God is asking you to move forward in faith. To trust His voice more than your own comfort.
Chasing the Peace of God
So how do we know when it’s time to step out?
1. We recognize His voice. The more time we spend with God, the more we learn to recognize when He’s leading us.
2. We test it against His Word. God’s direction will always align with Scripture.
3. We follow His peace. Even when obedience feels scary, there is a peace that confirms it’s the right step.
When Abram obeyed, he stepped into a promise that would bless generations. His story reminds us that God’s plans are always better than our own.
And sometimes, the hardest step is just saying yes.
A Prayer for Trusting God’s Plan
Father, I don’t always understand what You’re asking of me, but I want to trust You. Help me to surrender what I’m holding onto and walk in faith, even when I can’t see the outcome. Give me the courage to chase Your peace and trust Your promises. Thank You that You always have something better ahead. Amen.
