Have you ever been asked to do something that didn’t make sense? Maybe God has asked you to take a step of faith that seemed overwhelming. Imagine Noah’s reality for a moment—building a massive ark in the middle of dry land, gathering thousands of animals, and preparing for an unprecedented event that the world had never seen before. Yet, Noah did it all. Not because it made sense or was easy, but because he trusted God.
“Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” (Genesis 7:5 NIV)
This chapter in Genesis is one of the most sobering in all of Scripture. It details the moment when God’s judgment through the flood unfolds, yet it also highlights His mercy and the hope He offers through obedience. We see God’s instructions to Noah were not random; they were specific and purposeful. Noah was to take seven pairs of clean animals, two pairs of unclean animals, and enough food for everyone on the ark. Every detail was intentional, ensuring that life could continue after the flood.
Think about this: Noah had only seven days to load over 20,000 animals. That’s overwhelming! But Scripture tells us that the animals came to Noah. God provided for what He commanded. Isn’t that reassuring? When God calls us to something, He doesn’t leave us to figure it out on our own. He walks with us, providing exactly what we need at the right time.
The flood itself was no small storm. It rained for forty days and forty nights, with water covering even the highest mountains. The springs of the deep burst forth, and the floodgates of heaven opened. Yet, in the middle of that chaos, there was protection. “Then the Lord shut him in.” (Genesis 7:16 NIV) God Himself secured Noah and his family inside the ark. The same God who brought the floodwaters provided the safe haven.
What does this mean for us today? Sometimes, obedience requires stepping into the unknown. It means trusting God when we can’t see the outcome. Maybe you’re facing a situation that feels overwhelming. You’re looking at the “ark” in front of you, thinking, “How can I possibly do this?” Friend, remember that God is the one who provides the way. Your job is to trust and obey.
I remember seasons in my own life when God asked me to take leaps of faith that didn’t make sense. Times when I worried about the resources, the timing, or the “how.” And yet, like Noah, I discovered that when I took that step of faith, God showed up in ways I could never have planned.
His provision always meets our obedience.
This story also reminds us of God’s justice and mercy. Sin has real consequences, and while judgment came through the flood, so did salvation through the ark. Today, our salvation comes through Jesus, our ultimate Ark. He is our refuge, our safety in the storms of life.
As you reflect on Genesis 7, consider where God might be asking you to trust Him. Is there an area where He’s prompting you to step out in obedience? Remember, God sees you, He knows your heart, and He provides for what He calls you to do.
Father God, thank You for being a God who provides a way even in the midst of judgment. Thank You for the example of Noah, who trusted and obeyed You despite how overwhelming the task seemed. Help us to be people of obedience, stepping out in faith even when it doesn’t make sense. Remind us that You are our refuge and that You provide what we need. Teach us to trust Your timing and Your plans. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
